Planning to get your driver’s licence in Ontario? Understanding the eligibility and residency requirements is an important first step for new and first-time drivers in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, Newmarket, and across the province.
Requirements for Ontario residents
Ontario residents must:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have a valid Ontario driver’s licence
If you have recently moved to Ontario
If you have just become an Ontario resident, you have 60 days to continue using your existing driver’s licence and apply for an Ontario driver’s licence.
Ontario Driver’s Licence and Ontario Photo Card
If you have an Ontario Photo Card and apply for a driver’s licence, you must give up your Ontario Photo Card as part of the process. You cannot hold both an Ontario driver’s licence and an Ontario Photo Card.
Requirements for visitors to Ontario
Visitors to Ontario must:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have a valid driver’s licence from their home province, state, or country
- Have an international driver’s permit from their own country if visiting Ontario for more than three months
- Understand that they are not eligible for an Ontario driver’s licence
Additional declaration requirements starting May 11, 2026
As of May 11, 2026, when you apply for your Class G or Class M licence, you will need to declare that:
- Ontario is your primary place of residence
- Your presence in Canada is legal
