How to Get Your Ontario Driver’s Licence: G1, G2 and G Test Tips

Getting your driver’s licence in Ontario happens in stages. The graduated licensing system is designed to help new drivers build knowledge, supervised experience and confidence before earning a full licence.

Understanding Ontario’s G1, G2 and G Licence Steps

1. Pass the G1 knowledge test. This written test covers traffic signs, rules of the road and safe-driving fundamentals.
2. Practise with supervision. Use your G1 period to develop steady, safe driving habits and gain experience in different conditions.
3. Pass the G2 road test. The G2 test evaluates your ability to handle everyday city driving situations.
4. Pass the full G road test. This final test is the last step toward a full Ontario driver’s licence.

A Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course can reduce the usual 12-month G1 waiting period to 8 months. Approved driver education may also help with insurance costs, depending on the insurer.

• Know your G1 conditions. G1 drivers must have a zero blood-alcohol level and cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. Be sure you understand all G1 licence conditions before driving.

G2 Road Test Tips

• Consider an approved BDE course. Professional instruction can help you prepare for the road test while building safer driving habits.
• Make your observations clear. Move your head visibly when checking mirrors and blind spots so the examiner can see that you are scanning properly.
• Stop completely. At every stop sign, bring the vehicle to a full stop. Avoid rolling stops.
• Practise near your selected test centre. Familiarity with nearby intersections, speed limits and traffic patterns can help you feel more prepared on test day.
